Remembering Jean Chua Chen

Jean Shen passed away peacefully at her home on May 30, 2020 after a long battle with cancer. She was a lifelong teacher, an inspiration to her students, and instrumental in setting up the Chinese Brush Painting Society to help her and her students promote the ancient art form of Chinese brush painting.

Jean was born in the Philippines, but came to the United States to obtain a Masters Degree in Education. She studied the art of Chinese brush painting in Asia from Chinese masters and was the first person to introduce Chinese brush painting to educational programs in the San Diego area in the early 1970s and has been teaching ever since.

Jean was passionate and enthusiastic about Chinese brush painting and this transferred over into her teaching. She provided her students with the traditional teachings and methods, but encouraged, mentored, and helped each student find and develop their own expression and style.

Jean also obtained inspiration for her paintings through her faith. Her paintings have been on display in various venues in the San Diego area, as well as made into prints, tee shirts, cards, bookmarks, tote bags that have been sent all over the world. One of her eagle paintings was on display in the Prayer Room on Capitol Hill for many years.

Jean, and her artworks, will be truly missed in the Chinese brush painting community, but her presence, spirit, and legacy will live on through the artworks of her very talented students.
